It is the responsibility of all players to know all in-house and USA Hockey rules and to abide by these rules

General Overview
The Ice Palace Hawaiian Adult Hockey League is a non-checking, non-slap shot, ISI Hockey sanctioned league with four teams each in two divisions. The league is designed so all players can have fun while offering participation to the maximum number of players. The league plays year round, with a Fall/Spring Season, which runs from September thru May and a Summer pick-up.

Who May Participate?
Any player, with acceptable minimal skating skills or experience may participate in the league. All new players must attend an evaluation session to determine their individual skills. This evaluation will enable the league to place new players onto teams who can best utilize their abilities and talents. Call for evaluation times. There is a $16.00 charge for the evaluation. Also all players must register with ISI Hockey at www.skateisi.org before being evaluated. Full equipment must be worn.

League Fees
The Fall/Spring season fees will be based upon the number of games during each season. Registration and payment for each season must be paid before being placed onto a team. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Payment on a game-by-game basis is not allowed. We are sanctioned by ISI Hockey. Therefore, all players must register with ISI Hockey before their first game or evaluation. Registration fee is $25.00 per year. Membership is valid from September 1st – August 31st.

Playing Rules
House rules will supersede any USA Hockey Official Handbook rules 2003/05. The Ice Palace Hawaiian Hockey League plays full USA Hockey rules in addition to our house rules, including center pass and automatic icing.

Number of Players
Each team must dress a minimum of 5 (five) skaters and one goalie for each game. Failure to dress the minimum number of players will result in a 1-0 forfeit, and the game will be played as a scrimmage. Dressing non-team players will not be permitted unless the game is already forfeited.

Number of Games
Any player who misses 4 (four) consecutive games will be dropped from the team’s roster unless notification is given in writing of upcoming absences. Players who wish to re-join the league at a later date will be placed on a team with openings available. Players will be required to own a league jersey. Players must dress for at least 50% of a season to qualify for playoffs. Exceptions may be made in case of injury, work scheduling and/or players placed onto teams late in the season.

Alcohol
Alcoholic beverages will not be permitted or tolerated in the building. Any player caught carrying or consuming alcoholic beverages in the Ice Palace will be subject to a mandatory 30-day suspension from the building. Suspensions will encompass all hockey activities. Players who are under the influence of alcohol will not be allowed to participate in any hockey activities including league games, practices, pick-up games, classes (youth or adult), or special events.

Length of Games
All games will be played with three, 20 minute running time periods. Regular season games that end in a tie will be allowed a one round shoot out with 3 players. Each team will choose 3 players immediately following the 3rd period. There will be no warm-ups between the 3rd period and shoot-out. Regular season games that are within two goals will be played "stop-time" during the last two minutes of the game. The clock will begin stop time either at the first whistle into the 2 minute mark or at the 2 minute mark if said mark is reached during a stoppage of play. Total game time:
  5 minute warm-up
Three, 20 minute periods
A 2 minute break between each period.

Playoffs
During playoff games, in the event of a tie after the conclusion of the third period, a 15 minute run time sudden death period will be played after a 2 minute rest between periods. If, after this fifteen minute period the game is still tied, a sudden death shoot out will occur. During the shoot out all players must shoot before a team member may be repeated. The first team that scores will be the winner.

Non Contact Rules
All games will be non-checking. As incidental contact cannot always be avoided, the referee’s decision is final. At the discretion of the referee, a player can be assessed a MINOR or MAJOR penalty for blatant abuse of the non-contact rule.

Slap Shot
There will be no slap shots allowed in either league. A slap shot shall be ruled whenever a player’s stick is at shin level or above in an attempt to hit the puck toward the goal or in clearing the puck. In the event of a ruled slap shot, play will be stopped, and the ensuing face off will be held at the offending team’s defensive zone face off dot. A MAJOR Penalty will be assessed to any player who injures another player as a result of a slap shot.

High Sticking
High sticking shall be ruled anytime a player makes contact with the puck above the normal height of the waist. A MINOR penalty shall be assessed to any player who makes contact with an opposing player’s helmet with their stick. Other high sticking infractions shall result in a face off held in the offending team’s defensive zone.

MINOR Penalties
Any player assessed a MINOR penalty will be ruled off the ice for three minutes, running time, starting from when the puck is dropped after the stoppage of play. If the minor penalty is assessed during the stop time, the player will be assessed a two minute, stop time penalty. When two players are assessed coincidental penalties, both teams will play 4 on 4. Any player who receives three penalties in a game will receive a mandatory game misconduct penalty and an additional one game suspension.

MAJOR Penalties
Any player assessed a MAJOR penalty will be ruled off the ice for the duration of the game. Another player will serve the 7 or 12 minute penalty, during which time the team will play short handed. This penalty will not expire upon a goal being scored. The player will be assessed an additional one game suspension. All MAJOR Penalties incur an additional 2 game suspension plus any other penalties assessed by the rink management. The rink has 30 days in which to assess any additional penalties and suspensions. The suspended player may continue to teach youth hockey with consent from Ken Perel or John Beck. Any player assessed 3 major penalties in one season will be suspended for a minimum of 1 year from all hockey activities.

MATCH or GROSS MISCONDUCT Penalties
Any MATCH or GROSS MISCONDUCT penalties will be assessed an immediate suspension from the league. The suspended player will not return to the league until further disciplinary action or clearance from the rink management. The penalized team must sit a man in the penalty box for 7 or 12 minutes. This man may be substituted with other players during this time.

FIGHTING
Fighting of any kind will not be tolerated. Any player assessed a “FIGHTING” penalty will receive a mandatory 90 day suspension from all hockey activities. A FIGHTING penalty will be assessed to any player who in the course of an altercation throws any number of punches, regardless if he is the attacker or the defender in the situation. *USA Hockey rules state that by dropping your gloves, players will be given a fighting penalty. Management reserves the right to review each situation and to institute a penalty or overrule the referee if deemed necessary in extreme cases. Referees will not be eligible to referee while suspended from the league. Coaches for youth hockey may continue to coach with the approval of John Beck and Ken Perel.

Damage to the Facility
Damaging or attempting to damage this facility will result in an automatic ejection from the building for not less than one year. Attempting to “damage” will include punching, hitting, swinging sticks or equipment at walls, pexiglass, doors, etc.

Pickup Hockey
During the summer months the adult hockey league plays “pick-up hockey” on Monday & Thursday evenings, from 10:15pm to 11:15pm. The cost is $16.00 per person, per game. The first 22 players who pay will play. Signup is ongoing in the office. Players must be present to sign up. Must be a current member of ISI Hockey. All league rules will apply during pickup hockey. All equipment is required as stated in the league rules. Games are filled on a first pay, first play basis. We will not “hold” spots without payment. No refunds or credits are allowed for pickup hockey. You may sell your “game” to another player if the player is a current ISI Hockey member, in good standing with the rink and you call to notify the rink of the change. If you might be late, please call the rink to notify them of your tardiness to hold your spot. “No Shows” that are not called in may be resold by the rink to ensure that enough players are scheduled.

General Information about the Ice Palace
The Ice Palace opened its doors in September of 1982. When the rink was originally planned, hockey was not factored into the building stages. We hosted our first Oldtimer’s Tournament in January of 1984 with 28 teams from Canada and the mainland. Hockey was such a success the Hawaiian Hockey League followed soon after. Our adult league began in February of 1984 with 108 players broken down into 8 teams. The beginning level of play was mostly recreational. Since then, we have hosted teams from Japan, Finland, Germany, Australia, Canada, Korea, California, New York, Alaska, Minnesota, ex-professional players along with recreational players. We hosted our first Army vs. Navy hockey game in December of 1999 as a fundraiser for our youth hockey program. It was such a success that we plan on making this an annual event.
